In the ancient world, eating a meal with another person was considered a holy act.
It expressed the sacredness of relationship.
As we gather around the table, I invite you to be mindful of how we commune with Jesus together as a community both ancient and present.

Holy Communion gives us a glimpse of the beauty of sacred relationship:
that Christ is present here, Christ is host, and Christ welcomes and blesses us all.
No one is above or below another – young and old, the wealthy and the poor, those who celebrate and those who mourn – we come forward and eat together.

Hear this invitation to the Eucharist table:
Come to this table, not because you must but because you may,
Not because you are super-strong, but because you are also weak.
Come, not because any goodness of your own gives you that right, but because you need renewal and grace.
Come, because you love God a little and would like to love God more.
Come, because Jesus loves you and gave himself for you.
Come and meet the risen Christ, for we are his body.

The apostle Paul tells us the story like this:
For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you,
that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed
took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said,
‘This is my body that is for you.  Do this in remembrance of me.’

In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying,
‘This is the new covenant in my blood.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’
‘For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Loving God,
At this table, we are not alone.
We feast of you and we feast alongside your disciple people.
Here we taste the bread of heaven;
here we share the new wine of your community.
Empower us with your Spirit,
that we may be a people who live through our sacred relationships the good news for all the world to see and experience,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
