Has it been a while since you read the story of Abraham and Sarah? A quick flip through Genesis 12-25 reminds you of the zigzagging steps they take to be faithful to God’s promises. 

Let’s agree to do something as we journey with this couple through the ancient world. Let’s set aside easy answers and what we think we know. Instead, let’s reacquaint ourselves with stories of a divine call to leave a homeland, a covenant to keep trusting, and human action hemmed in by divine promise. 

To journey with these ancient characters under a star-lit night sky isn’t about avoiding what it means to be human. It’s about holding onto the hope that small steps accomplish big promises in the world God continues to bless.
