The Difference Between Agency and Control in our Lives

I’ve been thinking lately about leadership, uncertainty and the risks and beauty of transition.

And part of that, I was looking at Paul’s farewell to the leaders in Ephesus near the end of his run in the book of Acts. In chapter 20 we catch up with him saying goodbye to the elders of that church, telling them they would never see him again and handing the future of that community over to them (I wrote a bit about the section in Acts 20:17–38, link the footnotes1). but then Paul gets on a boat. And all of a sudden, any illusions Paul was still carrying about how things might unfold get pretty dramatically ripped away from him in short order.
