ADVENT LITURGY
By Bobbi Salkeld

On the third Sunday in the Advent season, the beginning of the church New Year,
we peer past the world’s sorrow to the joy of Jesus’ coming.
We focus our hearts on the joy of the shepherds:
humble, insignificant, and small in large matters of the world’s turning.
We hear the words of the prophet Isaiah spoken reminding us of the joy found in God’s coming:
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace who bring good tidings who proclaim salvation who say to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

The third Advent candle is the shepherd candle of joy. As we light this candle, we pray,

God of Great Reversal, you choose the small things of the world
to transform the world with your love. May we have ears to hear you through the noise of the season, to sense your quiet, humble, joyful approach.
Amen.

PRAYER
Paraphrase From Covenant Book of Worship
Give us, O God, such love and wonder that we may come to adore the Holy Child,
the promised King; and with our gifts worship him, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.
