APOSTLE'S CREED
Introduction by Joel Braun

I grew up in a small church, and can remember standing with my family and friends in our humble gatherings, reciting the Apostle's Creed - as some of us mumbled through and others spoke clearly and eloquently - everyone in their own tone & voice… and even their own pace, which i often thought sounded funny… yet: through the spirit of God we spoke together in unison.

Much like today, it was a group of beautiful, imperfect, people - seeking God; standing together. and even, if at least for the moments of speaking of these ancient words, we were bound by these, the simplest and most basic of affirmations about the Triune God that we worship and that loves us so.

At Commons, rather than create a statement of faith unique to our community we have chosen to affirm the historic Apostles' Creed. As we read and recite these words together today, we are connected into and celebrate our place in the long tradition of the Christian faith.

Would you read along with me, in your own voice, at your own pace even.

We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
We believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

PRAYER
By Kevin Borst

God you are good to all.
And because of your goodness, we receive grace without condition.
Over and over we have encountered this surprising grace that comes from you.
May your goodness be all that we see.
In the risen Christ we pray,
Amen.
