CAMP PRAYERS
Written by Alexandra ChubachiThankfulness Circle
Based on Genesis 1:1-23Sit in a circle in their small groups.
“Today we are going to talk about when God created this big wild wonderful world. A great way to start this is by sharing some of the things in creation we are thankful for”
Go around the circle and ask each kid to share one thing in the natural world that they love/are thankful for.
(animals, birds, insects, beaches, dinosaurs, space…so much to choose from!)
Psalm Yoga
Based on Psalm 104:5-13
Kids to spread out around the room and stay standing.“Today we are reading from a Psalm in the bible, which is like a poem or a song that was written about God. The Psalm we are reading today is all about how God takes care of all the different parts of creation.
I am going to read some of this poem, and we will do some yoga poses to move through the poem!”
We’ll start by standing strong with our feet on the ground (mountain pose)
God made the earth solid, it won’t fall.
Now go down into a forward bend.
God covered everything with water, like a blanket. You can wave your hands back and forth like your running your hands through water.
Now put your hands on the floor, kick your feet back and lay on your stomach.
When you told them to, the water moved away from the land. The water flowed down the mountains…
keep your belly on the ground and push your shoulders and chest up (Upward dog)
…The water settled into the valleys.
Now push your knees up so your bum is in the air (downward dog).
Now the water gives life to all the plants and animals.
Jump your feet up to your hands and slowly start to rise, raising your hands to the air like a growing plant (sun salute)
God gives the earth everything it needs.
Finish by bringing your hands to your heart and saying Thank You God!
Water Reflection
Based on Exodus 17:1-7Kids to sit in front of you, create a little space at the very front of the room for your container.
Put a container (clear, ideally) full of water at the front of the room.
Today we are talking about a time when God’s people were stuck in the desert. Imagine how it would feel to be super super thirsty while you look at this water. What do you do when you are thirsty? What if you can’t reach a cup or are in someone else’s house? You have to ask for water. Well the Israelites had to ask God for water in the desert, and guess what, God made it happen!
God wants us to ask for what we need too. We might not need food and water here in Canada, but we need other things, like patience with our siblings, help not being afraid, or good friends. Lets pray for what we need.
Dear God,
In all these bible stories, you are teaching how you listen to us and care for us. Help us remember to ask you when we need something. Maybe we are afraid and need to be comforted. Maybe we are frustrated and need help being calm. Maybe we are super happy and need someone to celebrate with us. Thank you for listening to us and giving us what we need.
AmenBreath Prayer
Based on Mark 4:35-41“Today we are talking about a time when the disciples faced something hard and scary. We can all probably think of a time when we’ve had a hard time or been scared. So we are going to practice a really easy prayer that you can pray to Jesus when you are scared”
Get the kids to space out a bit around the floor and sit cross legged. Ask everyone to put their hands on their belly, close their eyes, and breathe deeply, feeling their stomach going in and out with their breath.
After a few breaths say:“Now, when you inhale, in your head say the words “I will not be afraid” and when you exhale say “Jesus is with me”. While you breathe, I will say the words out loud a few times”
Amen
Imagination Prayer
Based on Revelation 22:1-5, 16-17Dim the lights and play sounds of a flowing stream. Get the kids to spread out and lie flat on their backs.
Today we are going to use our imaginations to pray. While you lie down, I am going to talk about different places in nature, and I want you to try and imagine in your mind what those places look like. You could even try to imagine that you are there, walking around!
Lets pray,
Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Feel the ground against your head, your back, your bum, your legs, and your feet.
Imagine you are lying beside a beautiful river, it’s clear and blue and sparkling. You could sit here by the river all day, maybe you would even jump into it! Imagine that God’s love is running in this river, flowing to everyone who is near it, right to you.
Now, picture some trees around the river. Their leaves are blowing softly in the wind, and the sound makes you feel safe and calm.
Imagine the sun is shining through the leaves. The breeze is warm, and you can feel the sun shining gently on your face. The sunshine is God’s love too. It warms you up and makes you feel happy and alive! No matter where you are, God is with you. You can use your eyes, your imagination. your body and your heart to experience God’s love.
