A PRAYER FOR ASH WEDNESDAY ON VALENTINES DAY: Written by Bobbi Salkeld

Join me in a prayer for the interruption of the themes of Ash Wednesday on this Saint Valentine’s Day.

    Let us pray.

    Ash Wednesday’s reminder is simple:

    Empty yourself of delusion,

And know that you will die.

And so we take a moment to pause,

    To stand,

    To face,

    To fumble,

    To refuse,

    To turn again toward,

    Our death.

But our reflection does not end there.

    We face the fact

    That those we love

With our whole hearts and the presence of our bodies

Those we love will one day die too.

    The grief of that,

    The weight of that,

    The denial of that,

Is what we turn to face today.

And still, we open our hearts to the Eternal One,

Who authors and works with a strange kind of love math.

That when we let go, we subtract, there is a new kind of filling.

When we lay down a burden, more lightness moves into its place.

When we are honest about our unknown end, we will be free to live more fully.

In this place of honesty and finality we pray –

God of love, lead us to life.

God of love, lead us to life.

God of love, lead us to life.

Through these 40 days of Lent.

    Amen.
