EARTH DAY RESPONSIVE READING
Written by Scott Wall
Inspired by Wendell Berry’s agrarian essays, collected in “The Art of the Commonplace.”

Today is Earth Day, where we are called to attend to our world, to repent of the ways we abuse it and to work for preservation.

Sustaining God,
You are Light, Water, and Life.
In you we experience creative, teeming energy.
Reflected in the world around us.

Oh God, grow in us a love for all living things.

We are sustained by this earth we walk
We are part of a community: creature, land, soil, and fruit.
We ingest their gifts with thanks.

Oh God, grow in us a love for all living things.

And we repent of the ways we waste.
And we consume.
And we spoil what you have made.

Oh God, grow in us a love for all living things.

We repent of how our technology exploits.
We use it to solve our problems…
And it captures our attention.
Give us grace to see the world,
To be at peace with it,
At play, in work, and in care.

Oh God, grow in us a love for all living things.
So that we might love You more.
Amen.
