PRAYER FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY WILDFIRES
Written by Scott Wall

Today as we gather, most of us are likely aware of the wildfires burning around Yellowknife and Kelowna.
Drought conditions and high winds have intensified the situation, and this morning thousands of residents are scrambling for safety as crews battle the blazes.

As we watch from a distance — thinking of those we know and care about in these areas, perhaps — we face the reality that there is so little we can do.
And it’s from that place that I invite us to pray together.

Confessing our worry.
Standing in solidarity.
Straining to trust the mystery of God’s care for all things, even in moments of crisis.

Join me now - let us pray.

God -
Source and sustaining presence in our lives.
Comforting and calming presence when we are afraid.
This morning we confess our helplessness in the face of these disasters -
We hold our concern for your creation -
We’re so aware of all we can’t control.

Even as we think of those who race for safety.
Those separated from places and people they love.
Those surrounded by chaos, uncertainty, and loss…

We think of those working, in danger and beyond exhaustion to contain these fires.
We think of community leaders and officials, overwhelmed and doing all they can.
We think of ordinary neighbours and friends lending their strength, resources, and spaces to help and house others…

And as we do, we pray -
Lord, have mercy.
Give your peace to hearts overcome by fear.
Give your strength to the hands that shield and comfort and rescue.
Give your wisdom to all who must respond and act today.

And give us grace to trust that you see - that you care - that you are near to every anxious heart.
Amen.
